How to Take Care of your TENCEL™ bedding
Share
TENCEL™ is a fabric known for its softness, breathability, and skin-friendly qualities. Derived from sustainably sourced wood pulp such as eucalyptus, beech, or spruce, it’s often called vegan silk or eucalyptus bedding. While it’s easy to care for, a few simple practices can help maintain its texture and longevity.
Here’s a clear guide to keeping your TENCEL™ bedding in its best condition.
1. Wash Before First Use
Always wash your TENCEL™ bedding before using it for the first time. This helps remove any residual handling dust from packaging and allows the fibres to fully open up for better softness and breathability from day one.
2. Wash in Cold Water
Always wash your TENCEL™ bedding in cold water on a gentle cycle. Hot water can weaken the fibres and reduce the softness over time. Cold water helps preserve the quality of the fabric and is also more eco-friendly.
3. Use a Gentle, Skin-Friendly Detergent
Choose a mild detergent that is free of harsh chemicals, artificial fragrances, or dyes. Plant-based or biodegradable options are ideal. Avoid bleach or enzyme-based detergents, which can break down the fibres.
4. Avoid Fabric Softeners
TENCEL™ is naturally soft and breathable. Adding softeners or dryer sheets can leave a coating on the fibres that reduces these benefits. Let the fabric do what it’s designed to do, no extras needed.
5. Air Dry When Possible
Line drying is the gentlest option for TENCEL™. If you’re using a dryer, use a low heat setting and remove the fabric as soon as it’s dry. Avoid high heat, as it can make the fabric stiff or cause damage over time.
6. Don’t Overload the Washing Machine
Give your TENCEL™ bedding space in the wash. Overstuffing the machine can lead to uneven washing or strain the fibres. For example, wash a duvet cover separately or with just a few pillowcases.
7. Treat Stains Gently
For spot cleaning, blot the stain gently with a soft cloth and a diluted solution of detergent or white vinegar. Do not rub aggressively. TENCEL™ is naturally stain-resistant, so gentle methods are usually enough.
8. Iron with Care, Use Steam Instead
If ironing is needed, use the lowest heat setting and iron on the reverse side of the fabric. You can also use a handheld steamer to release wrinkles gently. Steam is a safe and effective option that softens the fibres without direct heat, helping the fabric maintain its smooth finish.
